Pausing My College Applications to Say… I Told You So

During this Finals season, there has been one surprise to quite literally everyone but me: Kiah Stokes.

I remember last year, in Game 3 of the Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm series, Becky Hammon subbed in Stokes for defensive rebounding purposes. Stokes, who had lost most of her playing time to NaLyssa Smith and Megan Dileo, did exactly what she needed to, and the Aces went on to win the series.

Stokes is really good at being in her spot. She's never too hot or cold, in the wrong position, or overzealous with her movements. This is especially important when defending the unpredictable Angel Reese. Because Stokes is a constant force, she can stay disciplined and stop Reese's drives without overcommitting.

This skill, understanding your task and executing, is exactly what Stokes is doing now in the Finals. The title of this article says “I Told You So” because I actually had Stokes as a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year in my midseason award predictions. Her defensive efficiency and the film I watched of her helped convince me she deserved consideration. (Interestingly enough, I didn't have Angel Reese on that list…)

While I'll be in Spanish class and swamped with early application deadlines during Game 6, I'm hoping for another clutch performance from Stokes.
